Book review: JG Ballard, The Wind from Nowhere
first book by JG Ballard. i see now that there is in at least some of ballard books, a theme that repeats itself: something in the natural environment breaks out of its normal parameters; becomes lethal to humans; few survive and we happen to follow the stories of some of these “survivors”; finally the condition or conditions cause of so much pain and destruction cease or seem to cease and the survivors find themselves at the beginning of a new era to rebuild humanity on the earth. however I don’t mean to imply that this stories repeat themselves or that they are boring. it’s like Asimov’s “A Choice of Catastrophes”: there are so many things that could go wrong and suddenly change our lives. we give for granted so much: the more our technology evolves, the more we give its fruits for granted. I am here typing this notes on a laptop using electricity, the fan behind me its keeping this unusual tropical wet weather to an acceptable level, and yet this could soon end for any number of reasons.. an EMP could fry all this electronics and soon I’d be going back to the (long forgotten) skill of hand writing (until the reserves of paper are exhausted). I love jg ballard books because I am the type of person that focuses on the negatives; the glass , for me, it’s always half empty, never half full, so I welcome any sort of catastrophism in the books i read. |
