movie review: Oldboy (2003) South Korea (Oldeuboi)mmm high level of ranting i am afraid. i remember when i heard of the south korean cinema “renaissance” few years ago, i saw movies that I liked a lot. then these south korean movies started moving into a splatter/violence area which perhaps is even a window on some fucked up social problems they have in SK, however it really doesn’t do for me. even in this Oldboy, where one is supposed to be taken by the dark secret behind the plot of the movie, after a while i personally started feeling detached and wondering away with my thoughts. the story is also so convoluted and yet so simple. I don’t know what’s wrong with the south korean society and life style, but I am glad i am not part of it. the only reason to recommend this movie is the peculiarity of the story, and the progressive discovery of why certain things happen to the main character, Mr. Dae-su Oh. I think it is movie to be seen but for me, it hasn’t scored very high. One thing that I have discovered, I admit ignoring it, is that the director Chan-wook Park is the same of Lady Vengeance and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. Basically these are the movies that I didn’t like much. These movie are borderline horror, and all obsessed with vengeance, like Oldboy. |
