virgin broadband big brother dns service

recently  i had noticed that virgin had introduced a redirection for  unresolved DNS names (urls on the browser) to a page with advertisement, and other links within the virgin-verse.

obviously I was very annoyed but only today I found the time to google it and see what was going on.

as a matter of fact, announced like the building of the pan galactic motorway that causes the earth destruction in HHG2G, virgin had introduced the “service” in august (a month where a lot of people go on holidays?) offering the chance to opt out.

obviously the vast  majority of users don’t understand that this is wrong, because they are being brought somewhere where they haven’t chosen to go; actually they don’t even know that they are being taken for a ride.

anyway the only good news is that I have opted out and it looks like the effects are immediate, the operation is simple, no login or other information is required, and it’s done online on this page:

select NO, and that’s it.

I really find upsetting the way they call it the “advanced network error search”.

It’s a scam, they are using your mistakes in typing names or broken links to make money!
