concert review: Diana Krall at the Royal Albert Hall, 30/10/2009

it was a disappointing night, but thankfully it wasn’t diana krall’s fault.

where to start? the seats turned up to be in a box where 8 people had to  be   squeezed with a legroom that is comparable to ryan air, and this at the price of 75 british pounds, or quids, pro-capita! ok, maybe DK as THE ARTIST could decide to lower her fees and impose on venues to lower the price of ticket, but maybe that’s wishful thinking.

The acoustic of the RAH must be one of the worst I have heard in my life, or DK needs a better audio engineer. Or it was because I was in a f* box ; but it is a fact, that at the end of the first song, 2 or 3 voices from the audience spoke up asking for better audio because on the sides they couldn’t hear neither voice nor piano very well. So there must be something to it. Incidentally Diana Krall didn’t take these requests very well, and she felt, probably being wrong, that the attitude of the people who spoke up was of the type: “we paid good money, gives us a good service”; whereas to me it was more like: “can you please  put the volume of the piano and of the voice a bit up”?

DK was probably also exhausted, she mentioned she had been touring for too long, and the evening before she had already played the RAH. she seemed to be emotionally drained, she mentioned that her husband and children were in the venue yesterday evening and that she had not seen her husband for a while. She tried to be generous and play as long as it took, including an encore, but she wasn’t her usual self. She wasn’t entirely focussed, she was a bit strange and she herself admitted that, being chatty..but I don’t blame her. she was in a chatty mood, but she said herself: when you tour for so long, you travel, play, sleep then travel and you don’t speak a lot with people, so she said tonight  I feel like talking with the audience.

The voice too I think was tired, strained; it  lacked that warm feeling that we have felt in the past from the recording and live concerts.

I think that All DK could think of was her children, and Halloween, and I don’t blame her. I hope for her that she gets time out to spend with her family.

Concerning the RAH it must be an aweful venue, not even a taxi rank outside, people flooding the busy road all fighting for a cab.

However , as I said, it wasn’t  DK’s fault.
