London Breakfast Restaurants Review: The fountain restaurant at Fortnum & Mason [Breakfast with John Landis]

I swear it is true! Today we had breakfast at this restaurant and John Landis was there with 2 other people (initially we thought Aidan Turner from Being Human but I think it wasn’t him). Very exciting. Let me state this immediately: this is a very very posh establishment and it can be intimidating; however I walked in in my usual attire which is NOT smart casual but several points below smart casual, and it didn’t feel so bad. But if you dress up or dress better than usual, you won’t feel in the wrong place. This is an interesting place for coffee lovers because there is a selection of specialty coffee along the list of specialty teas (including a 38 pounds a pot tea); and I had a Brazilian hacienda coffee which was very nice; and it comes in a silver coffee pot, very classic and classy; however I had a bit of a hilarious moment when I was served the pot as coffee and discovered just hot water inside. Not sure if I was going to embarrass myself, I smelled the water, in the off-chance that Brazilian specialty coffee might be colourless. No, it was hot water. Maybe i had to wait for something? but nothing arrived; so eventually I sent it back as Hot water and I got a big apology and finally I could enjoy my specialty coffee which, I can confirm, is like all other coffee, only a nicer taste. I had the 6 pounds porridge with whiskey syrup, which made me think of the 5 dollars shake on Pulp fiction; It was however really delicious and the syrup really had a taste of whiskey but very nice even for someone like me who would not drink whiskey.

My friends had mostly eggs, the Arnold Bennet Omelette and the Eggs Royal. Satisfaction varied from ok to disappointing, and at this prices it’s not a good sign.

I noticed some very nasty big containers of orange juice, the type you would see in american supermarkets, like 2 gallon industrially processed orange juice which made me jump on the seat. I don’t want to think about it; but I won’t be having orange juice in this place.

In terms of location and design the place is really classic but nice, with plenty of room, airy, lots of light and direct access from and to the F&M shop (during opening hours – the restaurant opens earlier than the shop).

Overall it’s a very expensive place, quite overpriced for the quality, but I think it is worth at least a visit.

Besides, how many times can you have breakfast with John Landis in your life?

The price below includes service charge (hence tip) – sorry guys, this is Europe and we still have the good sense to charge service.

Booking recommended or required.

Website

Approx. 18gbp per person. Basically as low as 12gbp + service if you ordered a posh porridge and a posh specialty coffee..

I can deal with a 24 dollar hamburger but I don’t think I could deal with a 24 dollar breakfast.
I guess P.T Barnum took his show to London. As in “there’s a sucker born every minute.”
