movie review: Blackboard Jungle, 1955

and I thought that young people, these days, here in london, were scary. little i knew how scary they were in 1955 in some new york inner city school.

mind you, americans are ALWAYS scared by something, today it’s the muslim, before it was the communist and even before it was the germans..

this movie is almost a propaganda movie  for the department of social affairs. the hard core veteran who wants to teach more than anything else; the “few bad apples” that ruin the whole harvest and then finally the natural “health” defences kick in and they “expel” the bad apples and then everything is peachy; the MAN who cannot accept a good paying job in a better school in a better neighbourhood but prefers the challenge of a worse paying job in a bad neighbourhood in a worse school where the kids don’t give a damn about learning and school, are  a mix of mental retards inbreds and criminals, and anyway are destined to take on the shitty manual hard working jobs for the uneducated….

on the positive side you get to see Sidney Poitier who, although 28, was playing a high school kiddo.
