Stay clear of La Cie and its products

Updated 11/03/2010

this is the last instalments of the farce:

La Cie said that they would send a courier today to collect the hard disk but the reference number they have used is for a pickup somewhere else in the country. Not from my address.

La Cie technical support is a joke, it takes them days to reply.

Do yourselves a favour and DON’T BUY LA CIE!

If I can give you a small piece of advise: DO NOT BUY LA CIE PRODUCTS!

I am having one of those warranty service nightmares with La Cie where 2 hard disks, a

1TB LaCie BigDisk U2&F4&F8 EXTREM+ 7200 32MB EK

and a

BigDisk (details will follow)

Both broke in the same week. One still in warranty and one out of warranty. La Cie asked me almost 400gbp + shipping fee to repair a 200gb out of warranty, which seems ludicrous to say the least.

But that is nothing compared to what they have done with the one under warranty. After I shipped it at my expenses (these disks are like 2 kg plus packaging), they returned it to me still broken with a delivery note that reads: the disk has no fault.

The disk is dead, it died while in service although it is a dual disk with mirroring. All the data was lost, and I am not even getting upset about that. Shit happens. But the disks is broken in the sense that if you plug it to a computer and turn it on, it doesn’t show up. Obviously I have tried all combinations of cables, power adapters, etc.. etc..

It is enough anyway to listed to the hard disk to know that something is wrong because instead of making that nice sound of a disk spinning this enclosures keeps making a horrible clicking noise for ever.

Bottom line is: don’t buy La Cie. The service is appalling and also the type of service is really poor; even before I sent the HD back for repair , they asked me the most stupid questions. They even asked me to try the hard disk with a second power adapter. This was easy for me because I have 2 La Cie disks which use the same type of power adapter, so I have 2 of them, but how would you go around running that test if you just had 1 single La Cie product? Buy a second power adapter?

Absolute nonsense.
