Fleck, Hussein, Meyer live at the Barbican

There are days that are destined to be remembered.

I still remember the day that I discovered the indian tablas. I was flabbergasted, I was 20 and I felt the inadequacy of my musical educational and knowledge.

Yesterday night will become one of these nights to remember.

Tablas are strongly distinctive and yet in the hands of Zakir Hussein they seem to be so versatile. I never thought I would hear a banjo a double bass and tablas play together but there you go.

The supporting group was interesting and they were exceptional musicians too (and exceptionally young too), but they seemed to feel the urge, the pressure of the pending concert and in fact they even mentioned the fact in passing.

The three masters played generously: i don’t know for sure how long, but I felt that they concert lasted a nice length of time, and there was an encore.
I could’ve stayed there the whole night long but as I was leaving, I didn’t feel shortchanged as it has happened often recently (Orchestrion? Rava/Bollani? certainly the king of music cons Brad Mehldau).

This is a great trio and I strongly recommend that you do to do whatever it takes to go and see them. I was lucky enough to see them almost on my doorsteps, at least at my office doorsteps..

Some info on the trio
